Introduction Singing is a central element in the practice of many religious and cultural traditions. Singing together has also long played an important role in schools for many of the same reasons – it brings people together in a shared expression of thoughts which are given greater impact when the music is added to the words. This activity that gives pupils the opportunity to think about the power of music to bring words to life. Activity
Create a song for a particular purpose - e.g.:
- celebrating a special time in life/in the year
- giving thanks
- praising God
- celebrating nature and the environment
Working in groups:
- Write the lyrics for a song of three or four verses - you may also wish to include a chorus to be repeated at the end of each verse
- Make up a simple tune for a song on your chosen theme.
- Record the song digitally on MP3.
The finished song should be suitable for pupils of your own age to sing in assembly/collective worship, so it must have a tune that is easy to remember and that people will enjoy singing.
Your song should have:
- have lyrics that express a relevant idea effectively throughout the song
- a memorable tune and show creativity and originality
