Sacred Spaces

Introduction
This activity encourages RE teachers to create opportunities for pupils to learn outside the classroom. Through taking part in an RE visit, pupils will have opportunities to explore what makes a space sacred for the people who use it and to reflect on precious spaces in their own lives.

Activity
  • Design an interactive RE trail for your age or year group visiting a place of worship or other sacred space
  • The trail should include 5 or 6 activity stops spotlighting artefacts, objects, documents and/or other features as appropriate that would help a visitor understand more about the expression of beliefs, practices and/or ways of life, or identity, religion and culture of the people whose sacred space it is.
  • The activities should include a balance between opportunities (a) for a visitor to develop knowledge and understanding about the sacred space and (b) for the person to reflect on what is seen and experienced.
  • The trail should stop at points of significance or special interest which should help visitors understand more about beliefs, practices and/or ways of life of the people whose sacred space it is
  • Where possible, the trail should include sensory experiences during your trail (smell, taste, touch, sight, sound).
  • The finished trail should take the form of a digital presentation or electronic leaflet with illustrations of each activity stop and questions/activities to develop knowledge and understanding and to provide opportunities for reflection.

The trail:
  • should engage pupils through its activities, questions and points for reflection and through the attractiveness of its presentation
  • should give the visitor an understanding of beliefs, practices and/or ways of life or identity, religion and culture of the people whose sacred space it is.
